Requirements for Bringing Your Pet to Dubai

If you're considering moving to Dubai and want to bring your pet with you, it's crucial that you know the requirements and procedures necessary to ensure a smooth transition. Below is the essential information for transporting companion animals, such as dogs, cats or other pets.

Documentation and General Requirements

The requirements may vary depending on the country of origin, but the general requirements for importing pets to Dubai are as follows:

Vaccines

The pet must have all mandatory vaccinations. It is essential that these vaccines are documented on a vaccination certificate. The primarily required vaccines are:

For dogs: Rabies, canine distemper virus, canine parvo virus, infectious canine hepatitis and leptospirosis.

For cats: Rabies, feline panleukopenia, feline rhinotracheitis and feline calicivirus.

Health Certificate

A health certificate issued by an official veterinarian is required, which must be processed no more than 1 day before the trip. This certificate must be signed, stamped and translated into English.

Import Permit

It is necessary to obtain an import permit, which must be requested from the competent authorities. To obtain it, you must visit the corresponding website:Permission

Microchip

The pet must be identified with a microchip. All related documentation must be submitted to the appropriate authorities.

The generally accepted microchip is the 15-digit, unencrypted ISO 11784 microchip. If your microchip does not meet the ISO 11784 standard, you'll need to bring your own microchip scanner.

EU Passport for Companion Animals

This is an official document that must be presented when crossing borders. It must be obtained from the veterinarian.

Pre-Entry Examination

The pet must be examined by an official veterinarian for diseases and parasites within 24-48 hours prior to entry. The document issued by the veterinarian must be in English.

Quarantine

The need for quarantine depends on whether the pet comes from a country considered to be at high risk for rabies. Spain is classified as a low-risk country, so quarantine is not required for pets from there.

List of low-risk countries: Australia, Austria, Andorra, Barbados, Bahamas, Bahrain, Belgium, Czech, Denmark, Estonia, Fiji, Finland, French Polynesia, Falkland Islands, Germany, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Kuwait, Liechtenstein, Mauritius, Malta, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, San Marino, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Vanuatu, Qatar, Netherlands, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Palau, Latvia, Albania, Croatia, Maldives, Spain, Meldives, Cyprus, Korea, Montenegro, Seychelles, Suriname, Micronesia, Greece, Marshall Islands.

List of high-risk countries: All those not listed above.

Pre-Ship Treatments

Treatments needed for dogs and cats within 14 days before shipment include:

- Control of external parasites (with fipronil or permethrin).

- Deworming (anthelmintic with praziquantel).

Transportation Procedure

All pets must be transported as manifested (air) cargo to Dubai. The transport of pets must be compulsorily managed by an agency specialized in animal travel; self-transportation is not allowed, except in the case of assistance dogs.

Upon arrival at Dubai Airport, all the documents mentioned above must be presented. Be sure to bring hard copies of all required documentation.

We recommend choosing the airline Etihad Airways (Abu Dhabi) for this service, as it will reduce the number of stops and, therefore, the need to manage additional documentation. Etihad Airways allows pets weighing less than 8 kilos to travel in the aircraft cabin. If the pet's weight exceeds this limit, it must be transported in the hold.

Important Note: The transport of pets must comply with IATA regulations. For the exact conditions, see the guidelines of theIPATA.

Dog breeds banned in all of the United Arab Emirates

The breeds that are not allowed are: American Bully, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Any Mastiff breed, Boerboel, Bullmastiff, Bully Cowl (Alangu and Indian Mastiff), Doberman Pinscher, Japanese Tosa and Canarian Soot.
